Medical and psycho-pedagogical diagnostics using domestic and global diagnostic methods of ASD (ABLLS, ADOS)

Diagnosing the Autism Spectrum Disorders and of the other developmental disorders should be carried out by a team of professionals: a neurologist-doctor, a psychiatrist, a psychologist, a speech therapist, defektologist-teacher. The diagnosing of children is performed using clinical and psycho-pedagogical methods, as well as using international standardized methods: ADOS and ABLLS.

ADOS (plan for diagnosing assessment of autism) – is referred to as "the golden standard" for the assessment and diagnosis of autism and other related general mental development-disorders, named as Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). ADOS is applied with children of all age-groups, with different levels of intellectual development and language skills. This methodology is a structured technique, which provides a standardized procedure for assessing communication, social interaction, play and behavior of the child.

ABLLS – is a tool to evaluate the development of basic skills of children with autism and with other developmental disorders. Test results on ABLLS-R provide a wider amount of information for parents and professionals, on the basis of which they can develop individualized educational program for a child, taking into account the level of development of his initial skills.

ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) therapy (children’s groups of early development and for-school-preparing, using methods of AB –therapy).

ABA therapy - (Applied Behavior Analysis) – is based on knowledge of the general "laws" human behavior, how it works and how learning process evolves. ABA therapy uses these laws in behavioral therapies to be able to increase the level of ‘desired behavior’ and to reduce the level of ‘dangerous or problematic behavior’ that may interfere or prevent from learning and effective social interaction. ABA therapy is also used to improve speech and communication skills, attention, cognition, memory and academic skills.

ABA therapy includes many different methods and is recognized as the best method of treatment for autism and which has been scientific substantiated.

Tomatis therapy

Tomatis’s Method - is a system of special audio-vocal trainings. The purpose of the method is to improve the brain's ability to perceive and to process information, received by the ear. With the help of the trainings on Tomatis method emerges a ‘reprogramming process’ of perception and understanding of speech.

These trainings are recommended for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, with attention deficiency, hyperactivity disorder, delayed speech and psychomotor development, writing impairments (dysgraphia, dyslexia) who demonstrate an inability to perceive and analyze the information they have heard, which leads to problems in communication, learning, and brakes development of social skills. Audio-vocal training method  by Tomatis enables to teach a child to perceive and assimilate information, facilitating to development of social skills and interaction.

Sensory Integration method

Sensory Integration – is a person's ability to organize the sensations experienced by his body to be able to perform movements, to be learning and to normally behave. We learn through the senses perceiving sensations - visual (seeing), audio/sounds (hearing), olfactory (sense of smell),  gustatory (tasting), tactile (touching), vestibular (middle ear) and the sense of gravity. Autistic children often have various sensory disorders. They may be insufficiently sensitive or too sensitive, and are not able to integrate their sensations. Sensory integration therapy focuses on reducing the sensitivity of an autistic child and on helping him to reorganize sensory information. Sensory integration therapy includes specially arranged ‘contacts’ with various sensory stimuli. The goal of this therapy - to strengthen, balance and develop the processing of sensory stimuli of the human central nervous system.

РЕСS - alternative communication system.

РЕСS- is a program that allows a child to quickly acquire basic functional communication skills. With РЕСSyou canquickly teach a child to take the initiative and to spontaneously utter words. Using РЕСS, communication for the child with others becomes more comfortable and thus, he becomes capable to generalize his acquired verbal skills.

Individual and group educational sessions with experts: psychologists, speech therapists, social teachers, specialists in communication development.

‘Correctional –and-developing’ assistance by these specialists is structured in the form of individual, subgroup, consultative sessions with children.

A Psychologist conducts sessions on development of communicative, emotional and social capacities of a child. Classes are held in the form of game: play-therapy. In the course of game activity a child learns to participate in a dialogue, interaction and cooperation with the other person, learns to manage the basics of social games, improving communication skills and the ability to control his emotional condition.

A Speech-therapist conducts sessions on speech development: the expansion of passive vocabulary of a child (understanding of a speech, addressed to a child by others) and the accumulation of active vocabulary, as well as the development of skills in correct pronunciation, grammatical structure, phrasal and coherent speech.

A Defectologist (speech pathologist) conducts sessions for the development of a cognitive activity. Cognitive activity involves the development of a child’s psycho-mental functions: thinking, perception, attention, formation of skills to generalize and other areas.

A Social teacher conducts sessions for the development of a child’s daily living skills: tidiness, self-service, standard rules of behavior in the family and in public.

The procedure and conditions for admission of children into the Center for autistic children:

Parents (or a child’s legal representatives/custodians) can apply to the Center for autistic children for consultations or rehabilitation services on their own initiative, or upon the referral by other organizations and specialists.

After applying, the full data about a child should be recorded in the registration logbook: (name and surname of the child, the date of application/referral visit, passport data of the child and his parents), and the first meeting with the parents should be appointed. The parents are invited for the first visit to come without their child: merely to collect the primary detailed information of his medical and socio-psychological case (history). It is desirable to have the following documents available:

Once all the data is collected, a second meeting should take place where parents have to come together with their child. A team of professionals conduct assessment of mental development of a child, the results of which must be presented provided to the parents and legal representatives/custodians: in the form of initial information on the condition of the child, his developmental level; the team of professionals produce the recommendations on how to take care, develop and educate such a children with autism.

In case of confirmation of the child's Autism Spectrum Disorder, and based on the conclusions and recommendations of the experts of the Center, the child is entitled to receive psychological and educational support at the Centers for autistic children.

The specialists of the Center elaborate an individualized development program for each child in accordance with his individual schedule for comprehensive integrated psychological and educational support. At the end of his stay in the Rehabilitation Center, his parents have the opportunity to continue the rehabilitation process at home, based on the provided recommendations. Re-admission of a child into the Center is possible after 6 months (depending on the decision of Experts’ Council of the Center).

The Center for autistic children works according to the schedule of the calendar year, with working hours from 9.00 to 18.00.
